3 SIGNS IT'S TIME FOR A SCALP SCRUB

May 01, 2023 3 min read

A healthy scalp is the key to healthy hair! That is why it is so important to develop the right routine, with the right products, to give your scalp the care it needs. The goal is a balanced scalp microbiome so that you are giving your hair the healthiest environment. With all the many different products, routines, weather and environments, scalp care can get complicated and sometimes a simple shampoo isn’t going to cut it - this is where a scalp scrub comes in!!

Scalp scrubs are designed to exfoliate the scalp. The products gently remove product buildup and dead skin, while also soothing irritation and stimulating circulation. If you’ve been wondering if it’s time to add a scalp scrub to your routine, here are a few signs that a scalp scrub may be right for you:

  1. Your scalp is itchy

An itchy scalp is always the first sign of buildup trouble! It is often a sign that your shampoo or other products have begun to build up at the roots. This build-up can happen with salon quality products (especially if you are using a lot of dry shampoo or texture sprays!) but drugstore products are bad offenders due to their myriad of ingredients and silicones that coat the hair and build-up!

A scalp scrub like Symbiose Micro-Peeling Scrub by Kerastase is a great place to start treating an itchy scalp caused by product build-up. Additionally, adding a clarifying shampoo (we love Maxi.Wash by Kevin Murphy or Oribe’s The Cleanse) to your routine can help reduce future build-up issues!

  2. Your hair fall has increased

Another sign that it may be time for a scalp detox is if you are noticing that you seem to be shedding more hair than normal. When dead skin, oil, and sweat build up on the scalp, the circulation to the follicle decreases. This decreased circulation can cause the amount of hair fall to increase.

A scalp detox using Specifique Cure Anti-Thinning Aminexil Scalp Treatment by Kerastase is my top recommendation for this type of situation! Plus, Kerastase’s Genesis and Genesis Homme lines are clinically proven to reduce hair fall!!

  3. You have a dry, flaky scalp

We know flaking can be embarrassing but don’t worry there are many things that can be done to improve the scalp condition! Cold and dry climates (hello Saskatchewan), aging, and oil-stripping products can all be potential causes of flaky scalps. If you notice flaking and falling skin, it’s a good indication that there is a lack of moisture in the skin. A scalp scrub detox is a great starting place to jumpstart the healing.

The scalp scrub we would recommend for a dry flaky scalp is the Symbiose Micro-Peeling Scrub by Kerastase. Then follow up using products designed to keep that scalp health in top form, like the Kerastase Specifique Bain Vital Dermo-Calm shampoo!!

And of course, if you are experiencing a mix of the above or do not know where to start you have two additional fabulous options: book in for a blowout with added scalp scrub or book in for a free hair consultation.

At the blowout with added scalp scrub, your stylist will pick the scrub product that is right for your scalp concerns, treat you to a relaxing experience while giving your scalp the TLC it needs, and give you some insight into your scalp and hair’s condition. This option also gives the benefit of having someone else wash your hair for you - a lovely added bonus.

In our free consultations, your stylist will take a look at your scalp and hair, chat with you about your concerns, and give you some options for future salon and/or at-home treatments!

We offer a wide variety of tried and true scalp care products in-salon and online at Salon Society. If you are unsure what to choose, reach out to our team - we are more than happy to help you pick out the right products!
